Spermicide Shaving Cream
A Salt Lake City Weekly reader asks
an
important question:
This morning as I was shaving in the shower I read the ingredients list
on my can of shaving cream and was astounded to see nonoxynol-9 among the
various other chemicals (stearic acid, sodium laureth sulfate, etc.). I
happen to know that nonoxynol-9 is the spermicide usually applied to
condoms. What’s the deal? Are millions of American men slathering their mugs
every morning with spermicide?

Be Better Guys
Thank you to the good guys at Be
Better Guys. They've included Shaverama in their list of
recommended
sites. I don't have my own list, but I certainly recommend Be Better
Guys. It's a new site that's growing and getting better all the time. Thanks
again.

Don't Shave Immediately after Waking
"Hollywood dermatologist" Dr. Gene Rubinstein says the latest five-blade
razors actually shave too close. And he gives some
tips for a
good shave. Here are a few:
• Do not shave immediately after waking since the skin on the face will
be slightly swollen; wait 20 minutes.
• Use a facial soap or cleansing scrub to remove dead skin, dirt and oil. Do
not use soap as this dries the skin.
• Always prep with warm water to make the skin more pliable and open the
pores (showering first often accomplishes all of the above, but not too
hot!)
• Always shave "with the grain" of your hair growth which can be determined
by rubbing the hand over the stubble -- the direction that feels more rough
is "against the grain". (Note: those who have previously been shaving
against the grain to get a close shave will still get a close shave by
shaving with the grain, though it may take a week or two for the face to
adjust to the new method)
• Be methodical when you shave -- do not shave the same area twice, lift the
blade after each stroke, and don't press too hard!

Quote of the Day
From the
Green Bay Press-Gazette:
"Barbers in general are an obsolete profession," he said. "You can't even
call what I do work, because it's better than that."

Shaving Story of the Week
A dwarf is
suing prison chiefs because he fell off a sink while shaving.
Byron Rhodan, 23, who stands 4ft 1ins, claims a guard told him he had to
shave even though he was too small to see the mirror in his cell.

Yep Five Blades!?
The Gillette Fusion hits Europe. Now it's time for some
Brit sarcasm:
So ultimately we understand the point of owning a good razor or two.
Gillette, as you probably know, has launched a shaving system in the UK
with, wait for it, five blades on the front and one on the back. Yep five
blades!? They are taking the piss right? Quite how they managed to fit them
onto a razor is one thing, what they do is another matter.

True Love
When I have children, I will name one Gillette and the other Fusion.
Guess my dog will have to be named Razor.
That is how much I love the battery-powered Gillette Fusion Razor.
A columnist for the El Paso Times gets a little
carried away.

They Don’t Break Down Like They Used To
The Lincoln Journal Star has a
fun article on a local shaver
repair business that found new life by going online:
Back in the early 1970s, Remingtons, Schicks, Ronsons and Sunbeams
malfunctioned with a regularity that allowed a shaver repairman to pay his
mortgage, clothe his kids and even take in a Cornhusker game or two.
“They don’t break down like they used to,” says Carroll Burns.

Life's Compromises
Columnist Peter Crescenti says that from now he's going to
shave in the car each morning on the way to work. That way he'll save 12
minutes a day, or 900 hours over his remaining working life. One problem:
I use one of those Panasonic wet/dry electric razors that gives you the
option of shaving with or without a lathered face, and I get a closer,
smoother shave with. But life is full of compromises and, for all that extra
sleep, this is one I'm willing to make.

Apply Sunscreen Daily - Advice for Men
Men now account for
10% of all cosmetic sales, according to a Glamour magazine
survey. And a specialist tells us how to use them:
•Skin should be cleaned twice a day. Men produce more sebum and therefore
have oilier skin.
•Exfoliation unclogs pores, smoothing the texture in preparation for
shaving. It also allows for better absorption of moisturizers.
•A lightweight moisturizer likely will keep skin balanced.
•Sunscreen should be applied daily, even on cloudy days, to protect skin
from harmful ultraviolet rays. Same goes for earlobes and scalp, especially
if hair is thin.
