Hillsong - As Memorable As Carpet
Sydney's Daily Telegraph reveals
what it thinks of Hillsong music, in a profile of local pop singer Delta
Goodrem:
Delta Goodrem has all the passion of a Telstra commercial. Her songs are
pure Hillsong - indefinably, almost seductively, pleasant and ultimately
about as memorable as the carpet in an airport lounge. You don't like Delta
so much as you don't dislike her.

An Open Book
The Oshkosh Northwestern profiles
Jeremy Camp:
If he dared to be so bold, Jeremy Camp could compare his career in
Christian music to the big book itself.
Like the Bible, Camp is an open work. Just read a few chapters or take a
listen, and some may realize he has something to say.

Nothing Nerdy
There is nothing nerdy about Joel Houston, the tousled blond frontman of
Hillsong United, the rock band that drives the youth ministry for Sydney's
18,000 strong Pentecostal Hillsong Church.
The Sydney Morning Herald says that
Houston's eighth album has debuted at Number Six on the Aussie charts,
"a feat few musicians, Christian or not, could match".

Hey, W, You Need to Write a Song about This
Michael W. Smith sings at his concerts - and, it seems, also does a lot
of talking:
Over the course of his career, Christian musician Michael W. Smith has
made 19 albums – and some very powerful connections.
That was evident Saturday night, when Smith performed to a nearly full house
at Christian Fellowship Church on Evansville’s North Side.
...At two different times during the concert, Smith – who described himself
as a strong patriot – spoke of his ties to President George W. Bush.
In introducing “There She Stands,” a song about the American flag, Smith
said the song was inspired by a conversation he had with the President
several weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
“Right in the middle of this (conversation), he said, ‘Hey, W, you need to
write a song about this.’ I said, ‘I’ll try, Mr. President,’” Smith
recalled.
At another point in the concert, Smith presented a Presidential Volunteer
Service Award to a local woman on behalf of the President. Smith is
co-chairman of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

You're Kind Of Juggling Everything
How did
Delirious? mark Easter while touring the US with their kids?
That’s a really good question, because every day on the road, you can
slip into kind of maintenance mode. You know, with sixteen children with you
– I’ve got three – you’re just trying to survive the day. There’s the
catering; there’s the hotel runs; there’s the swimming pools; there’s the
wash bags; there’s all these elements that you’re kind of juggling.
And then, you think, “Oh, it’s Easter day today. This is the foundation of
our belief.” And it’s almost like any other day. We want and try -
especially with the children – to bring focus and attention to how special
it is to them. But it’s also kind of just trying to make things work. You’re
kind of juggling everything.

Truth Is, We're Never Going to Run out of
Things to Write about God
Matt Redman talks to Cross Rhythms:
I'm a man of few words. I don't think I could do six or seven verses.
Graham Kendrick could. Graham could probably do 34 verses. He's got a mind
like no other I've met. That's the truth. One time Graham was showing us a
song that he'd written and I think he had four verses and then for the fifth
verse he had eight different versions of what it could be. I think he wrote
a ninth one in the end and that became the one.
Truth is, we're never going to run out of things to write about God. I
remember Pete Waterman's stock observation. He said you can only write four
songs: 'I love you', 'I hate you', 'Go away' and 'Come back'. He says if you
look in pop culture that's what all the songs are about.
But when it comes to writing songs about God and our response to him you are
writing for eternity. There are so many elements of who God is, his nature
and character, so much stuff in Scripture that we can dive into, get our
theological, devotional teeth into. I'm excited to be able to do that.

I Love Walking into an Australian Bakery and
Just Smelling the Smells.
Rebecca St. James
misses Australia:
Q: You've lived in the States for several years now, but you're
originally from Sydney, Australia. You've done a great job of keeping your
accent, by the way.
A: Thank you! I've tried.
Q: Do you ever get homesick for Australia -- especially any hometown
food favorites?
A: (Laughs) You know, I've actually said if I lived back there, I
would put on 10 pounds pretty quick! The stuff I like back there is all
really bad for you. I would be so tempted to eat all this good stuff --
sausage rolls, meat pies, apple turnovers. I love walking into an Australian
bakery and just smelling the smells.

Why Does My Heart Feel Like It Has Been
Pulled Out, Turned Round and Put Back a Different Way Round?
Delirious? frontman Martin Smith
reflects on the group's tour of India:
Another tour, another crowd, another continent, another plane ride. So
why does my heart feel like it has been pulled out, turned round and put
back a different way round? Why do I feel like life can never be the same
again?”

Songs of Faith and Trust
Christianity Today interviews
Matt Redman:
A while back, my wife Beth and I were in a really painful situation. She
had just had another miscarriage, and it happened to be the week of the
London bombings. So out of us flowed "You Never Let Go," a little song of
faith and trust.
But here's the cool part. A while later she was pregnant again, and things
were going really well. We came out of the ultrasound scan, having seen our
little baby on the screen, and the idea for "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made"
popped into my head.
Beth and I ended up writing it together as a celebration of the miracle of
God's creation, and a challenge to use the lives he's given us for His
glory. Back in September 2005, Beth gave birth to our fantastic little son
Rocco. He is an amazing blessing.

How Do You Describe What You Do To a
Non-Christian?
The San Jose Mercury News interviews
Chris Tomlin:
Q How do you describe what you do to a non-Christian?
A Words and melodies make a huge impact in the soul of every person.
. . . People call it Christian music . . . but when I'm describing it to
people, it's just music. But I'm trying to write music that encourages
people in their walk with God and in their relationship to God.
I feel like I write songs that hopefully help people worship God and kind of
give them a soundtrack for people and their lives in their worship of God.

Delirious in India
The DNA
India website reports on Delirious in Mumbai:
Although the band isn’t much in to Indian music, thy’ve noticed Bollywood.
“Indian music is niche in the UK. But my friends from Basement Jaxx are
clued into Bollywood and they make good use of it on their records. That’s
how I’m exposed to it,” he says.
Quiz them about the so-called ‘anti-christ’ bands like Marilyn Manson and
Stuart says ‘belief in something is the core of anything that one indulges
in’. “Our music is based on a particular belief and that’s what keeps us
going.”

Clocking with a Sundial
Reuters/Billboard, writing on the Christian music scene, has some
great comments on Phillips, Craig & Dean:
Another great '06 album was the Phillips, Craig & Dean disc "Top of My
Lungs." It features the signature harmonies and kind of potent songs that
have defined Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig and Dan Dean's 16-year career as a
trio. Offspring Garland Phillips and Devin and Danielle Dean even sing the
classic hymn "Tis So Sweet."
Each member continues to serve as pastors in their respective churches.
Phillips says that at the start of the group's career, some people were
skeptical about the members' ability to balance careers as pastors and
musicians. Yet they still find time for new hobbies as well. Dean has taken
up running and is training for a marathon. "They're clocking him with a
sundial," Phillips quips.
